Mode of Action

Guarda combats plant pathogens and provides continued defense through cellular damage and inhibition of these organisms. It is the first EPA-registered crop protection tool with thyme oil as the registered active ingredient, and it is formulated like no other, as the thyme oil is standardized by its active content, thymol. Guarda’s mode of action is cell wall destruction, telomerase inhibition, and cell membrane damage leading to loss of cytoplasmic content and ergosterol depletion.

The HOLDit® Advantage

The HOLDit Technology in Guarda captures the active ingredient, thyme oil, and allows it to remain active over a period of time extending performance against plant pathogenic organisms.

Without HOLDit, thyme oil is rendered inefficient because the active ingredient thymol volatilizes in the environment, never allowing for correct contact time to destroy microorganisms. This plant-based inert is tolerance exempt and approved for use without restrictions.

ZeroTol 2.0 delivers immediate contact kill with zero residual activity - by design, PAA breaks down quickly to oxygen and water. What makes Guarda different from other botanical fungicides?

Guarda uses thyme oil as its EPA-registered active ingredient with BioSafe's proprietary HOLDit technology, which binds the thyme oil to plant surfaces for up to 14 days of residual activity per application. Most botanical or contact fungicides have little to no residual - Guarda's 14-day window is comparable to conventional synthetic fungicides without the restrictions. Zero-hour REI and 0-day PHI mean no downtime and no harvest restrictions.

How does Guarda fit into a rotation program with ZeroTol 2.0?

ZeroTol 2.0 provides immediate contact kill but degrades completely to water and oxygen with no residual - by design. Guarda fills the residual gap: apply ZeroTol 2.0 to knock down active pathogen populations, then rotate to Guarda to provide 14 days of residual inhibition between ZeroTol applications. Alternating the modes of action also prevents pathogen populations from adapting to a single chemistry.

Is Guarda safe for workers and can it be used without PPE?

Guarda has a 0-hour REI - workers can re-enter immediately after application. No restricted entry period. Combined with its 0-day PHI, it is one of the most worker-friendly and schedule-flexible fungicides available for controlled environment production.
