Schaefer Versa-Kool & Commercial Ventilation Fans
Schaefer is a commercial ventilation manufacturer producing the Versa-Kool horizontal airflow (HAF) circulation fan series and shade pole inflation blowers for greenhouse and agricultural building applications. Schaefer Versa-Kool fans are a standard in commercial greenhouse operations for continuous air circulation -- available in 8-inch through 24-inch blade diameters with CFM ratings from 450 to 7,860 CFM per unit. AEF Global is the parent company and distributor of the Schaefer product line.
Versa-Kool Horizontal Airflow Fans
The Schaefer Versa-Kool is designed for continuous-duty operation in the high-humidity, temperature-cycling environment of commercial greenhouses and grow rooms. The motor is sealed against moisture; the housing is corrosion-resistant polypropylene; and the fan is UL listed for commercial use. Versa-Kool fans are used in HAF (horizontal airflow) arrangements where fans are positioned along the perimeter of a growing zone and aimed to circulate air in a circular pattern across the canopy -- reducing temperature stratification, suppressing fungal disease by preventing stagnant air pockets, and providing the gentle stem movement that promotes stronger plant structure. They are also used with pole mount hardware for positioning at various heights within large greenhouse bays.
Inflation Blowers
Schaefer shade pole inflation blowers maintain the air pressure between the two layers of a double-poly greenhouse roof -- the pressurized air pocket provides significant thermal insulation that reduces heating costs in cold climates. Available in 60 CFM and 148 CFM outputs for small and large greenhouse structures. For commercial accounts and volume pricing on Schaefer fan installations, call 888-815-9763. Schaefer Fans FAQ
What is horizontal airflow (HAF) and why does it matter?
Horizontal airflow (HAF) is a ventilation strategy where multiple circulation fans are positioned to move air horizontally across a growing zone in a circular pattern, rather than pulling air vertically through the canopy or exhausting it directly outside. HAF maintains a continuous, low-velocity air movement across all plant surfaces -- typically targeting 50-100 feet per minute at canopy level. This steady horizontal movement prevents the stagnant boundary layer air at leaf surfaces where fungal pathogens colonize, reduces temperature variation across the canopy from 5-10 degrees F without HAF to 1-2 degrees F with properly designed HAF, and provides the gentle mechanical stimulation (thigmomorphogenesis) that strengthens stems. HAF fans complement but do not replace exhaust ventilation -- they circulate air within the space while exhaust fans remove heat and manage CO2.
What size Schaefer Versa-Kool fan do I need for my greenhouse?
For HAF applications, the total CFM of all fans in a zone should be able to move the total air volume of the zone every 1-2 minutes. Size individual fans based on their position and the length of the circulation path -- for a 100-foot greenhouse bay, 1,500-2,000 CFM fans positioned every 50 feet on alternating sides create effective circulation. The 12-inch Versa-Kool (1,470 CFM) is the standard for medium greenhouse bays; the 20-inch (5,470 CFM) and 24-inch (7,860 CFM) models serve large commercial structures. For indoor grow rooms, the 8-inch (450 CFM) and 12-inch models cover most tent and small room applications. Use our Ventilation Calculator or call 888-815-9763 for sizing help.
Can Schaefer Versa-Kool fans be used continuously?
Yes. Schaefer Versa-Kool fans are designed for continuous-duty commercial operation -- they are rated and tested for 24/7 use in agricultural environments with high humidity, temperature variation, and airborne particulates. The sealed motor and polypropylene housing protect internal components from the conditions typical of operating greenhouse and grow room environments. In commercial HAF applications, these fans run continuously throughout the growing season without scheduled downtime. Regularly check that no debris has accumulated on the blade or in the motor housing, and verify that the mounting bracket is secure -- a fan that runs continuously can work fasteners loose over time if vibration is not properly dampened at the mount.
