Rockwool Grow Slabs for Commercial Drip Production
Rockwool grow slabs are the dominant substrate format in commercial greenhouse vegetable and herb production globally. Pre-formed mineral wool slabs wrapped in polyethylene provide a consistent, inert growing environment for drip-irrigated crops — each slab supports one or two plants through a full production cycle, then is replaced at the end of the cycle for the next crop.
Grodan Rockwool Slabs for Professional Production
Grodan is the market-leading rockwool slab brand in commercial CEA production, available at Hydrobuilder in their standard, Master, and Expert series for different production intensities and irrigation management approaches. Grodan Expert slabs are designed specifically for high-frequency drip irrigation with tight dry-back management protocols, featuring engineered water distribution characteristics that support uniform moisture content from the top to the bottom of the slab. Slab dimensions are standardized to fit professional greenhouse bench systems — available in 100cm, 120cm, and 150cm lengths in multiple height and width profiles.
Slab Setup & pH Preparation
Rockwool slabs arrive with an alkaline pH (7.5–8.0) and must be conditioned before planting by soaking in pH-adjusted water (5.5–6.0) for a minimum of 1 hour. Most professional operations soak slabs for 24 hours before transplanting to fully equilibrate the slab pH and verify water distribution uniformity. Install slabs on a slight slope (1–2%) toward the drain end to ensure complete drainage after each irrigation event. Cut drain slits at the low end of each slab before installation — without drainage slits, water accumulates in the slab bottom and creates anaerobic conditions that damage roots.
