Bucking Machines & De-Stemmers for Harvest Processing
A bucking machine β also called a de-stemmer or plant material bucker β removes harvested flowers from stems before the trimming stage. This step is the efficiency bottleneck that many growers overlook: without a bucking machine, manually removing flowers from stems accounts for hours of labor per harvest that a bucking machine completes in minutes. For any commercial operation that already uses a trimming machine, adding a plant material bucker directly upstream dramatically increases overall harvest throughput.
How Bucking Machines Work
Bucking machines work by feeding whole harvested stems through a series of rollers or a slotted plate. The slot or rollers grip and strip flowers from the stem as it passes through, collecting flowers below and routing stems away separately. Slot sizes range from 1/8 inch to 7/8 inch diameter to accommodate stems of different thicknesses from different plant varieties and growth stages. Most bucking machines we carry process both fresh (wet) material cut directly from plants and dried material after hang-drying, giving growers flexibility to incorporate bucking at either point in their harvest workflow.
Bucking Machines for Hemp & Commercial Cultivation
For hemp operations, bucking is especially impactful: hemp plants are large, stem-heavy, and grow in high-density field plantings that generate enormous harvest volumes. A commercial hemp bucking machine processes plants at rates that make manual de-stemming economically impractical at any meaningful scale. Reducing labor at the bucking stage directly translates to lower cost-per-pound processed and faster inventory turnover after harvest. Pairing Buckers with Trimming Machines
The most efficient harvest workflow sequences bucking before trimming: process whole plants through the bucker to separate flowers from stems, then feed the bucked material into a trimming machine for leaf and calyx trimming. This two-step approach is faster than any single-machine alternative at commercial scale and produces cleaner input material for the trimmer, improving final product quality.
