  • Guide to Freeze Drying

Key Features & Benefits of Pharmaceutical Freeze Dryers

  • The freeze dryer has built-in intelligence. It automatically and perfectly manages the freeze-drying process
  • The ideal vacuum pressure and drying temperature is maintained for each material—preserves freshness and potency
  • Each vacuum pump has been factory tested to guarantee 25 microns (25,400 Microns = 1 Inch of Hg) or better and listed CFM performance.

What causes organic material to degrade & lose freshness?

  • Water
  • Heat
  • Oxygen

Harvest Right's Pharmaceutical Freeze Dryer is a solution to all of these problems.

Water

Harvest Right’s Pharmaceutical Freeze Dryer removes water from plants and organic compounds while they are in a frozen state. This locks in the freshness of herbs and plants. Their appearance, nutritional content, and potency remain the same as when they were fresh. Freeze drying completely removes water in about 24 hours. No other preservation method comes close to removing water this quickly. This is important because the longer a harvested plant or compound retains water, the greater the chance it has of spoiling and losing nutrition and potency.

Heat

Most water extraction methods destroy enzymes and terpenes because of the heat used in the extraction process. Because the freeze-drying process does not use heat to remove water, the enzymes and terpenes in freeze-dried products are not destroyed.

Oxygen

Oxygen absorbers can be used to protect packaged foods and organic compounds against spoilage, mold growth, color change, and loss of nutrition. By removing residual oxygen inside the packaging to below 0.01%, oxygen absorbers effectively preserve packaged foods without the need for food additives/preservatives and without the need for vacuum sealing.

What’s the difference between Home Pro and Pharmaceutical Freeze Dryers?

The primary distinction between the Home Pro and Pharmaceutical freeze dryers lies in their intended use. Home models are specifically engineered for preserving food, whereas Pharmaceutical models are tailored to handle oils, medications, and other pharmaceutical substances.

Additionally, Home Pro and Pharmaceutical freeze dryers vary in their size capacities. Given that laboratories typically work with smaller specimen sizes, they require less space compared to Home Pro freeze dryers, which are designed to process larger quantities of food for preservation.

Nevertheless, despite their smaller physical footprint, pharmaceutical freeze dryers compensate with a greater number of shelves. This feature enables users to store a larger quantity of samples for laboratory studies.

When it comes to curing, it depends on what you are working with. For those curing flower, home freeze dryers work better at bud curing, with larger headroom between shelves. Pharmaceutical freeze dryers are also ideal for hash making but not for food due to the lack of space on each shelf. You can opt to remove trays to make room for food preservation or buy the food shelf attachment instead.

Pharmaceutical freeze dryers reach temperatures of 35 degrees Fahrenheit, which is more suitable for freeze-drying bubble hash. Out of the box, home freeze dryers have a temperature range of 40 - 125 degrees Fahrenheit, which isn’t recommended for freeze-drying bubble hash, as this can compromise the quality.
