Chroma Can Control Spectrum From 40% Red To 90% Red

Cultivators can optimize their plants at each stage of flowering. For example, we know full spectrum increases yield, but spectrums with higher red levels boost anthocyanin production, also known as purple. With this knowledge, growers can control Chroma's spectrum to maximize yield during bulking and enhance quality and color during ripening, capturing the plant's full potential. This capability also helps growers fine-tune their methods for specific products.

Spectrum Breakdown

R4-R5: These are cooler spectrums with more blue and green. They are great for root development and can reduce stretch and tighten node spacing. We recommend using these spectrums early in flower - weeks 1 to 3

R6-R7: These are very balanced spectrums. They are great for healthy canopy development and increasing the size of bud sites. We recommend using these spectrums during bulk - weeks 4 to 7

R8-R9: These are warmer spectrums. They are great for increasing anthocyanin production (purple) and the quality of the final product. We recommend using these spectrums during ripening - weeks 8 to 9

Independent Far Red Channel

This channel provides 15 watts of far red light. Far-red light (around 700–750 nm) is often called the “hidden boost” for flowering. When used the right way, it can help your plants grow stronger, flower faster, and produce bigger yields.

How Under-Canopy Lights Change Cultivation Workflow

Under-Clearing

Perhaps the biggest change to a typical cultivation workflow will be the reduction of under-clearing, also known as "Skirtting" or "Lollipopping". By leaving lower branches and bud sites intact, you will be able to increase your usable canopy depth by 2ft to 3ft. Small branches and bud sites that sit below the light source can be removed. Faven recommends leaving as much foliage on the plant untouched until "Stretch" or "Stack" is complete. This will allow the grower to accurately see what will turn into usable products and what can be removed. This process is best done between days 22-26 of the flower phase.

Deleafing

Deleafing for light penetration is not a new concept. However, the Under-Canopy application adds another factor to think about when removing leaves. The overall goal is to remove just enough leaves to create a mix of light in the middle of the canopy from both the top and bottom light fixtures. This approach blends the two main schools of thought widely practiced in cultivation: The dead strip (no fan leaves) and leaving as many leaves as possible. While removing too many leaves can be detrimental to the photosynthetic ability of the plant, not taking enough leaves blocks light from reaching bud sites located in the middle canopy. It's a balance that will likely take a run or two fully dialed in and standardized.

Planting Density

The third difference that is often overlooked when adding under-canopy to your cultivation is planting density. While density greatly varies across the industry, a constant that has been observed is the benefit of reducing plant count when adding under canopy lighting. The decrease will be different for every facility. Lowering plant count promotes more airflow and keeps bottom branches from blocking under-canopy lights. Instead of removing leaves to improve airflow and upward mobility of under-canopy light, reducing plants achieves the same result. Fewer plants also mean a reduction in labor from the nursery through post-production. Reducing plant count can be a scary thought, so we recommend starting with a single trial table and comparing results. In almost all cases, lower plant density outweighed control tables.

What makes the Chroma different from the R6 and R8?

The Chroma is Faven's spectrum-tunable under-canopy light. It's the only under-canopy fixture on the market with both independent spectrum control and an independent far red channel in one unit. Total output is 135 watts — 120 watts from the main array plus 15 watts of independent far red.

What controller do I need for the Chroma?

The Chroma requires Faven's CX2 Smart Controller, since it runs on Faven's own digital control protocol rather than standard 0-10V. One CX2 controller supports up to 150 Chroma units. Faven is also working on compatibility with Growlink and other panel platforms.

Can I use a standard 0-10V power cord with the Chroma?

No. The Chroma requires its own dedicated power cord, sometimes referred to as the 3.0 power cord, which carries Faven's digital protocol instead of standard 0-10V. It looks nearly identical to the standard cord but is packaged separately and marked with a yellow tag reading "3.0." Plugging a Chroma into a standard R6/R8 cord or controller will power the unit on, but it will default to a fixed R4 spectrum with no spectrum or far red control.

What is the spectrum range on the Chroma?

The Chroma adjusts from R4 to R9 — from 40% red (a standard, balanced spectrum similar to most LED top lights) up to 90% red. R4-R5 is best used early in flower for root development and reduced stretch. R6-R7 is a balanced spectrum well suited to bulk weeks, when bud sites are increasing in size. R8-R9 is typically used during ripening for increased color and cannabinoid development.

Does the Chroma's wattage change when I adjust the spectrum?

No. The Chroma maintains a consistent 120 watts of output regardless of spectrum setting. Many competing spectrum-tunable lights achieve their color balance by dimming certain diodes, which reduces total output — so a light rated at 150 watts may only be delivering 110-120 watts at a given setting. The Chroma shifts power between diode channels rather than dimming them, so full output is maintained at any spectrum choice.

What is the far red channel used for?

The independent far red channel (730nm) can trigger the Emerson effect, used two ways: running far red for about 5 minutes immediately after the top lights turn off, which early testing indicates increases anthocyanin production and purple coloration; or using far red during the day after plants have finished their stretch phase (typically after day 21-23 of flower), which early testing suggests can help reduce time to ripen by up to 7-10 days. Faven recommends starting with the after-lights-off use case, since daytime far red used too early in flower can increase stretch.

Is the far red benefit proven across all genetics?

Faven has tested the after-lights-off far red treatment across 12-15+ genetics without observing a negative response, though research on far red use in cannabis specifically is still developing. Faven recommends starting conservatively — 5 minutes after lights-off — to establish a baseline before adjusting further.
