Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) Hydroponic Systems
Nutrient film technique (NFT) is a hydroponic method where a thin, continuous film of nutrient solution flows through angled channels, across the bare roots of plants suspended in the channel, and returns to a reservoir for recirculation. The shallow flow (the "film" of solution) leaves the upper portion of the root zone exposed to air, providing the oxygen that roots require alongside the nutrients delivered by the flowing solution. NFT systems use no growing medium - roots hang in the channel and are wetted by the constant thin film without submerging. This makes NFT systems highly water and nutrient efficient with low media cost per cycle.
Best Crops for NFT
NFT is most widely used commercially for leafy greens (lettuce varieties, spinach, arugula, kale, bok choy), culinary herbs (basil, cilantro, parsley, mint), and strawberries - crops with compact root systems and short cycle times that suit the shallow, continuous-flow channel format. NFT is less appropriate for large fruiting crops (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers) that develop extensive root systems that can block channels, or for crops requiring high water volume at peak demand. Commercial lettuce operations using NFT channels run 8-16 plant sites per 3-4 meter channel with cycles of 30-60 days from transplant to harvest.
System Components
A complete NFT system requires angled grow channels (PVC or food-grade polyethylene), a reservoir, a submersible pump, a timer or controller for flow management, and net pots or channel inserts for plant support. Many NFT setups use A-frame channel arrangements to maximize growing density per floor footprint. Browse complete hydroponic systems and all hydroponic systems for NFT and other growing methods. NFT Hydroponic Systems FAQ
How does nutrient film technique work?
In an NFT system, a pump delivers nutrient solution from a reservoir to the high end of angled growing channels. The solution flows as a thin film (typically 1-3mm deep) down the length of the channel, wetting the lower portion of plant roots that hang through holes or net pots in the channel top. The upper portion of the root zone is exposed to the air inside the channel, providing passive oxygen delivery without aeration equipment. Solution flows off the low end of the channel and returns by gravity to the reservoir for recirculation. The pump typically runs continuously or on short cycle timing (brief shutoff cycles overnight in some systems) to maintain the thin flow film without flooding the channel.
What is the ideal channel slope for an NFT system?
The recommended channel slope for most NFT systems is 1:30 to 1:40 - meaning the channel drops 1 inch for every 30-40 inches of horizontal run. This slope provides enough gradient for solution to flow steadily to the low end without pooling, but not so steep that flow rate becomes difficult to control or roots dry out before solution reaches them. Too shallow a slope causes solution to pool and the thin film to become a standing pool; too steep causes flow to run too fast for adequate root contact time. Use adjustable channel supports to set precise slope and verify with a level before operating the system.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of NFT compared to DWC or drip systems?
NFT advantages: no growing medium required (eliminates media cost and disposal); excellent oxygen delivery through the exposed upper root zone; easy visual root health monitoring through channel inspection; very water and nutrient efficient due to closed recirculation. NFT disadvantages: sensitive to pump or power failures (roots dry out quickly without continuous flow); channel clogging from root mass as plants mature; less buffering against pH and EC fluctuation than systems with large reservoir volumes or growing media. DWC provides a larger nutrient reservoir buffer and is more forgiving of brief power interruptions; drip systems are better suited to larger plants with extensive root systems. NFT excels for commercial leafy green and herb production where its efficiency advantages and consistent product quality outweigh the management complexity.
