Fermented Plant Extracts & Liquid Amendments
Fermented plant extracts (FPE) are lacto-fermented liquid preparations made from fresh plant material - leaves, stems, fruits, and other botanical tissue - fermented in a sugar solution by naturally occurring lactic acid bacteria. The fermentation process breaks down plant cell walls and transforms the constituent organic compounds into forms more readily available to plants and soil microorganisms than the raw plant material. FPE is a core input in Korean Natural Farming (KNF) methodology and broader organic and biostimulant programs, valued for its microbial activity, plant-available nutrient content, and growth-promoting secondary metabolites produced during fermentation.
Types of Fermented Plant Extracts
FPJ (Fermented Plant Juice) is made from soft green plant tissue - young shoots, leaves, and growing tips at peak cellular activity, fermented in raw cane sugar at a 1:1 ratio by weight for 7-10 days. FFJ (Fermented Fruit Juice) uses ripe fruits and is similarly fermented in sugar - higher in carbohydrates and potassium, used as a bloom and ripening amendment. FPE in the broader sense encompasses all lacto-fermented plant preparations including fermented comfrey, fermented nettle, fermented sea plant extracts, and specialized preparations from any plant material with useful nutritional or bioactive profiles. These products are distinct from chemical fertilizers - they function as biostimulants that improve soil biology, nutrient availability, and plant physiological processes rather than providing direct mineral nutrition in the conventional NPK sense. Application in Growing Programs
FPE is applied as a diluted soil drench or foliar spray - typical dilution is 1:500 to 1:1000 parts water. As a soil drench, it feeds soil microorganisms and improves nutrient cycling; as a foliar application, it delivers bioactive compounds and microorganisms directly to leaf tissue where they can exert plant health and growth effects. FPE integrates naturally into organic growing programs alongside enzyme products, fulvic and humic acids, and other biostimulants. Fast shipping.
Fermented Plant Extracts FAQ
What is fermented plant juice (FPJ)?
Fermented plant juice (FPJ) is a lacto-fermented liquid amendment made from fresh plant material - typically young shoots and leaves at peak growth activity - mixed with raw cane sugar at a 1:1 ratio by weight and fermented for 7-10 days at room temperature. The lactic acid bacteria naturally present on the plant surface conduct the fermentation, converting plant cellular compounds into a microbially rich, biologically active liquid that promotes plant growth and soil health. FPJ is a core component of Korean Natural Farming (KNF) programs and is used in organic growing as a growth stimulant and soil biology enhancer.
How is fermented plant extract different from compost tea?
Compost tea is made by aerating water with finished compost to extract and proliferate the microorganisms and soluble compounds present in the compost - it is a water-based microbial inoculant. Fermented plant extract is made through a lacto-fermentation process using fresh plant material and sugar - it produces a concentrated liquid rich in lactic acid bacteria, plant metabolites, and biologically active compounds specific to the plant material used. Both are biostimulant inputs used in organic growing programs; they work through different mechanisms and are often used together in comprehensive organic fertility programs rather than as substitutes for each other.
How do I apply fermented plant extracts?
Dilute FPE at 1:500 to 1:1000 with water (1 ml per 500-1000 ml of water, or approximately 1/4 teaspoon per gallon at 1:1000 dilution) for soil drench or foliar application. For soil drench: apply at the base of plants during regular watering - the diluted FPE feeds soil microorganisms and delivers bioactive compounds to the root zone. For foliar application: spray diluted FPE on the upper and lower leaf surfaces in the early morning or late afternoon, avoiding application during peak heat. Start at the lower application frequency (once per week) and observe plant response before increasing to twice-weekly applications common in KNF programs.
Can I make my own fermented plant extracts?
Yes - FPJ and other fermented plant extracts are straightforward to make with common materials. Basic FPJ recipe: collect 1 lb of young green plant shoots (weeds, comfrey, nettle, or any nitrogen-rich green plant material work well), finely chop or blend the material, mix with 1 lb of raw brown sugar or rapadura sugar at 1:1 ratio by weight, pack tightly into a jar leaving 20% headspace for gas expansion, cover with cloth secured with a rubber band (allows gas to escape during fermentation), and store at 65-75 degrees F for 7-10 days. Strain the liquid, bottle, and refrigerate. The resulting FPJ is stable for 6-12 months refrigerated.
Are fermented plant extracts the same as liquid seaweed fertilizer?
No - liquid seaweed products are typically cold-pressed, extracted, or hydrolyzed from dried seaweed rather than lacto-fermented. They contain naturally occurring plant growth hormones (auxins, cytokinins), minerals, and alginic acid from the seaweed, but they are not fermented products and do not contain the lactic acid bacteria populations that characterize fermented plant extracts. Some fermented plant extract preparations specifically use sea plants as the base material - these combine the biostimulant properties of seaweed with the microbial and fermentation-derived compounds of the FPE process. Each serves a different role in an organic program; they are complementary inputs rather than equivalents.
