Redwood Mushroom Supply Grow Guide

Grey Oyster (Pleurotus pulmonarius) Agar Plate Culture

A robust staple for advancing your cultivation skills. The Grey Oyster mushroom is celebrated for its aggressive colonization, high yields, and culinary versatility. While the species is extremely beginner-friendly, this plate culture from the Redwood Mushroom Supply (RMS) laboratory is perfect for intermediate growers looking to refine their sterile techniques and advance beyond liquid cultures.

High Yields & Year-Round Performance

Our Grey Oyster strain produces impressive, dense clusters of off-white to grey fan-shaped caps. It is highly valued for its wide temperature tolerance, making it a reliable performer for year-round cultivation. In RMS grow trials, this resilient strain consistently produced 1-2 lbs of fresh mushrooms per 5 lb block and demonstrated a strong ability to produce multiple full flushes on both hardwood and straw substrates.

Fruiting Parameters

  • Temperature: 65-75°F (Wide tolerance)
  • Humidity: 85-90%
  • Fresh Air (FAE): High
  • CO2 Tolerance: Low (400-800 ppm)

Storage & Handling

  • Refrigeration: Viable up to 6 months
  • Room Temp: Use within 1-3 weeks
  • Requirement: SAB or Flow Hood required
  • Substrate: Masters Mix, Hardwood, or Straw

The Redwood Mushroom Supply Process

We provide laboratory-grade agar cultures expanded from early-generation slants to ensure peak genetic vitality:

  • Premium Agar Base: 100mm x 15mm petri dishes utilize high-quality Malt Extract Agar (MEA).
  • Verified Sterility: Sterilization is confirmed with chemical indicators and batch-tracked for quality assurance.
  • Secure Packaging: Plates are individually wrapped and sealed in breathable filter bags for protection during transit.
  • In-House Proven: Strains are tested and fruited at RMS headquarters to guarantee consistent yield and performance.

Cultivation Strategy

For optimal results, transfer a 1cm x 1cm agar wedge to sterilized grain jars or bags using a Still Air Box (SAB) or Laminar Flow Hood. Once the grain is fully colonized, use it to inoculate your final substrate at a 5-10% ratio. Side-fruiting from bags in a high-airflow environment is the recommended method for achieving the best cluster formation.
