Ebb and flow systems are some of the most widely utilized hydroponic systems around. Best for intermediate-level growers, these are inexpensive to set up and extremely versatile.
You can add and remove plants as you wish, a perfect feature for a fast-growing plant like the radish.
The methodology behind ebb and flow systems is simple. Essentially, your plants will be placed in a tray that is regularly filled with nutrient-rich solution that is pumped from a reservoir below the grow tray before gravity returns the water to the reservoir.

Although the plants remain in the solution for their entire lives, they don’t become deprived of oxygen because you’ll add an air stone and air pump to supply them with constant oxygen.
This kind of system is perfect for a novice grower since it has fewer components and moving parts than an ebb and flow system.

How Do You Start Hydroponic Radishes?
One of the easiest ways to start hydroponic seeds is with rockwool blocks. If you use these, you won’t need to thin them later.
To get your money's worth, use about 100 seeds and space them by about ¾” between plants. Proper spacing will influence the size and growth of your radish roots.
Remember, you’re harvesting the roots here, so it’s important to give them all space to spread out. You can also scatter seeds liberally into the growing media, but you’ll want to thin them when they have two sets of leaves later on.
This will prevent them from becoming overcrowded. The best growing media for radishes include perlite and vermiculite.
You may also want to consider using net pots. Cloning and transplanting older plants aren’t common methods of starting hydroponic radishes.

How Much Light Do Hydroponic Radishes Need?
Radishes can tolerate lower temperatures and lighting, but they do need some heat and light in order to grow.
Ideally, you will want to provide your hydroponic radishes with a minimum of six hours of light per day - but eight to ten is best.
Ideally, your daytime temperatures should be around 72 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit. These temperatures can drop to around 60 degrees at night, which will best mimic outdoor conditions.
You can use a grow light instead of natural sunlight, but you need to put it on a timer to mimic natural day-night fluctuations.
For a plant like radishes, a lower intensity grow light such as fluorescents would work great. Or, you can grab a lower wattage LED to provide wider coverage to a larger garden.
Tips For Growing Radishes Hydroponically Indoors
Radishes should be started on a basic growing nutrient from the very beginning to make sure they get the nutrients they need to stay healthy.
Use a nitrogen-rich grow nutrient until the tops are developed, then switch to a root nutrient (usually one that is heavier in potassium and phosphorus) after that.
If you stay with the grow nutrient, you’ll likely find that the greens develop more than the roots.
Radishes need to be kept adequately moist while they are growing. If they aren’t, they have a tendency to bolt - this will make them taste woody and bitter.
They won’t be of much use to you. That said, it’s also important for oxygen to be able to get to your radish plants’ roots.
Otherwise, you may have rot issues on your hands. Occasionally, you may need to provide your plants with a bit of support as they grow.
Use trellis to support the top-heavy greens if they start to flop over. You will know that your radishes are ready to harvest when the greens begin to die back.
Usually, it only takes three to four weeks for your radishes to be mature. You can easily grow radishes and receive a harvest every month of the year if you stagger the plantings in your hydroponic system!
