What are bloom nutrients

Bloom nutrients are specifically used during the plants flowering stage. This is one of the two different types of plant nutrients, the other are veg nutrients.

As you can imagine, veg nutrients are to be fed during the vegtative stage of growth when your plants are producing thick branches and robust foliage. On the flipside, bloom nutrients are fed during the bloom cycle, when your plants start switching their energy to create potent, dense buds.

What nutrients make flower bloom?

The main nutrients that make flower bloom are potassium and phosphorus. But, nutrients aren’t responsible for making your plant bloom - your lighting schedule is.

No matter what you feed your plants, they won’t start blooming until you flip the lighting schedule to 12 hours on, 12 hours off. This simulates the changing of seasons from summer to fall outdoors, and signals your plants they need to start producing resinous flowers.

When to switch to bloom nutrients outdoors

The specific time of which you’ll switch from your veg nutrients over to the bloom nutrients differs depending on whether you grow indoors or outdoors.

If you grow indoors, you are in charge of when your plants start flowering. You’ll change the light cycle from 18/6 to 12/12, and then feed bloom nutrients.

Your feeding schedule will also play a role in this, as after a set number of weeks vegging, you’ll swap to bloom nutes. However, most feeding schedules allow you to continue vegging as long as you like by simply repeating the final veg week until you are ready to flower.

But if you are growing outdoors, you have to follow the outdoor growing calendar. Your plants will flower much slower, starting when the days get shorter - which is after summer solstice. This typically occurs in late June.

Bloom Base Nutrients vs Bloom Additives

Bloom base nutrients are to be used as the main part of your feeding schedule during the flower stage.

These have a nutrient ratio which is ideal for plants in the flowering stage, with lower levels of nitrogen and higher levels of phosphorus and potassium.

Bloom additives, referred to as bloom boosters more often, go above and beyond what your base nutrients provide your plant to push out even bigger, more potent flowers.

A lot of bloom boosters help enhance terpene and flavonoid production, leading to more aromatic, flavorful buds.

Certain additives are referred to as flower hardeners, and are to be used in the final few weeks of flower.

They do exactly what the name suggests they do, which is harden your flowers and increase the density. This increases the weight of your buds and the bag appeal.
