Sump Pumps

Capturing and reusing the runoff from our hydroponic system can increase efficiency and reduce waste greatly. Instead of letting your excess drain off outside, consider using a sump system to maximize nutrient and water use!

What is a sump pump?

A sump tank is a collection reservoir for hydroponic runoff, including water and hydroponic nutrients. By capturing this runoff, we can use it again and decrease the waste our hydroponic systems produce!

The sump pump is responsible for mixing nutrients within the sump reservoir, while another sump pump transports them into a separate tank for use.

How do I size my sump pump?

Sizing your hydroponic sump pump is just like sizing a submersible water pump or an inline water pump.

Calculate your gallons per hour needs, and check the head height of your hydroponic system. Then, combine these two values with the chart associated with the pump (most pumps will display this information under the product listing) to see if the pump is efficient enough for your needs.

Remember to stay on the safe side by finding a pump capable of pumping two times more water than you actually need. If you get a pump that is too small, your hydroponic system will be ineffective. Most pumps can have their flow restricted to achieve a more efficient operation level.
