Organic Plant Nutrients

What are organic nutrients?

Unlike synthetic plant nutrients, these organic nutrients come from living or “organic” sources, such as animal or plant waste. Some examples are kelp meal, or fish based fertilizer. These are renewable and ecologically stable, and growers who decide to implement an organic feeding schedule will leave a smaller footprint on the environment.

Can you grow organically in a hydroponic system?

This is a hotly debated topic, as many experienced growers insist that in order for a plant to truly be considered organic, it must be grown in soil. Regardless, utilizing organic nutrients is a step in the right direction for those trying to avoid potentially harmful chemicals in their feeding schedule. It is important to note that organic nutrients are typically thicker, and can clog up hydroponic systems on occasion.

What are the benefits of growing organically?

  • Slower release means less chance of overfeeding, less likely to burn plants
  • Organic nutrients have a beneficial effect on the microorganisms living in soil that aid in plant growth
  • Less chance of nutrient run off and waste, as nutrients stay in the soil
  • Enhances the natural flavor of plants
  • Implementing organic nutrients improves your soil over time, making each grow better than the last

For those looking to ensure the highest quality nutrients possible, we carry OMRI certified organic nutrients, which carry a special certification stating they are up to the USDA organic codes.

Can organic nutrients burn plants?

While it is certainly possible to overfeed plants organic nutrients, it is less likely. Organic nutrients release much slower than synthetic counterpart. This creates a buffer, making it harder to burn plants. On the flip side, however, it is important to monitor for deficiencies, as it will take longer to correct these issues than with synthetic nutrients.
