Clay Pebbles & Growstones

What are clay pebbles?

Clay pebbles, also knows as Hydroton or Hydrocorn have been one of the most popular hydroponic growing medium for decades. These are made by heating clay at high temperatures causing it to expand. These are pH neutral, and completely inert, not passing any nutrients or minerals into the plant.

Clay pebbles are reusable, and plant roots can easily be removed from them at the end of each growing cycle. They can then be washed and sterilized, before using again.

Clay pebbles can be very heavy, however, and weigh down your system. They also do not retain much moisture, which means they will need constant watering.

What are growstones?

Growstones are an environmentally friendly and sustainable soilless option made from recycled glass, and are generally used in one of two ways.

The first and most basic way to use growstones is as a stand alone hydroponic growing medium. The second way is to have growstones used as a soil enhancement to aerate container gardens, potted plants, and flower beds.

Growstones are available in several particle sizes depending on your specific application. Smaller stones are ideal for propagation mixes, medium stones are best for soil enhancement, and larger stones are perfect for most hydroponic systems.

Clay Pebbles vs Growstones

Growstones are a better hydroponic grow medium than clay pebbles. Due to their rough finish, plant roots are able to anchor to the growstones easily. They are also far more porous, maintaining moisture better than clay pebbles, and provide better aeration.
