What is a MH bulb?

MH, also known as Metal-Halide, is a type of bulb used for indoor growing. We could go deep into the science behind this technology, but that's not why you're here. You are here because you need a replacement for your MH Grow Light. But, which one of these is best for you?

What are metal halide bulbs used for?

MH bulbs are used for veg, also known as the vegetative stage, because this technology puts off a cool blue wavelength, which is why it is best for vegging. This type of light forces bulbs to build thick, sturdy stalks, and robust, leafy foliage.

You might be wondering, can you use MH bulbs for the whole grow? Most growers will use High Pressure Sodium (HPS) bulbs during flower. If you try and flower a plant with an MH grow light, you will be disappointed in the results, as this isn't what the plant wants during flower.

How long are MH bulbs good for?

One of the main drawbacks of using MH technology is that the bulbs don't last forever. But, no grow light really does. At least with HID technology, you are simply replacing a bulb, rather than a fixture. Your MH bulbs will hopefully last you around 2-3 years of growing, or 24,000 hours.

Are metal halide bulbs energy efficient?

If you are looking for energy efficiency, metal halide is not it. You may want to consider a different lighting technology, such as CMH or LED. MH bulbs run pretty hot and burn a lot energy, but they are still a great option for beginners on a budget.
