What is the best light bulb for growing plants?
The best light bulb for growing your plants will depend on your indoor garden space, budget, and horticultural goals. HPS and MH bulbs are the simplest lighting technology available, and are great for large spaces. These HID grow lights cover a large amount of space, but burn hot.
CMH and LEC bulbs are the newest and most efficient HID lighting technology, with drastically increased efficiency, lower heat output, and a higher quality of light over MH and HPS grow lights. These bulbs also last over two times longer than other HID bulbs!
Fluorescent bulbs and tubes are the best light for propagation, since they are lower intensity and HID and LED systems. Fluorescent grow lights are commonly used by those growing in tight spaces, as these operate at lower temperatures and are less likely to burn plants.
What kind of light is best for indoor plants?
Plants need light from different parts of the spectrum depending on what phase they are in. They will grow to their full potential when exposed to light from the blue spectrum during the vegetative stage on an 18/6 photoperiod. This encourages leafy growth, leading to more bud sites when it comes time to flower. To encourage dense, heavy budding, light from the red spectrum is needed on a 12/12 photoperiod.
It is also important to consider other light on the spectrum, such as UV and infrared. There are some growers who insist UV-b light increases THC production, but this is still debated. Try introducing low levels of UV light into your grow room and see for yourself!
Can full spectrum light bulbs grow plants?
Creating a full spectrum of light is essential to getting robust, leafy growth while vegging, and heavy budding during flowering. Some growers will use a combination of MH and HPS bulbs to achieve this, but the most efficient way is to implement a full spectrum grow light bulb.
