1000 Watt MH & HPS Ballasts

For large grows, you may need a 1000 watt HPS and MH Ballast. While HID technology may be decreasing in popularity in favor of more efficient options like LED or CMH, we believe HPS and MH grow lights will always have a place in commercial growing.

What is a 1000 watt HPS and MH Ballast?

The ballast is what actually powers your HPS/MH grow light. It ignites the gas within the light bulb, and is responsible for regulating the charge. Without a ballast, your lamp would either never start, or would start and run too sporadically, burning and popping the bulb.

So obviously, these 1000 watt HPS and MH ballasts are really important, but which one is right for you? These days, there are some that are way better than others, so we'll break it down for you.

Which 1000w HPS and MH ballast is right for me?

You can break down these 1000w HPS and MH ballasts into two categories: digital and magnetic. Magnetic ballasts are a bit outdated at this point, and have a few issues. They are not very efficient and they run very hot. They also create a fair amount of noise, and RFI interference.

On the other hand, digital ballasts do not create a ton of heat, and are quite a bit smaller. They also operate about 30% more efficient, saving you money on your energy bill. They even sometimes have a dimmable function, so you can lower the intensity of your light during early stages where intensity is now as important. Finally, these digital ballasts also have RFI shielding, running quietly and blocking any RFI interference associated with older magnetic ballasts.

You also need to make sure your ballast is even compatible with your light. If you have a single-endeds (SE) light, you need an SE ballast. The same is true for double-ended (DE) lights.

Also look to make sure the wattage matches up. If you are shopping for 1000 watt HPS and MH ballasts, you better have a 1000 watt HPS or MH grow light.
