Gavita HPS Grow Lights -- Commercial DE & Single-Ended
Gavita's HPS product line covers the commercial standard for high-intensity discharge flowering production -- double-ended HPS fixtures in 600W, 750W, and 1000W configurations with integrated or remote electronic ballasts. The Gavita Pro 1000 DE (standard) and Pro 1000e DE (E-Series, adjustable output 600-1150W) are among the most widely deployed commercial DE HPS fixtures in North American indoor production, with a track record of reliability and the EL2 Master Controller ecosystem that allows single-point management of up to 80 fixtures simultaneously.
Gavita Pro 1000e DE -- E-Series Adjustable Output
The Gavita Pro 1000e DE uses their E-Series electronic ballast technology, which allows output adjustment from 600W to 1150W in discrete steps without manual ballast replacement. This adjustability provides operational flexibility: run at 750W during early flowering when full intensity is not yet needed and heat management is a priority, ramp to 1000W for peak flowering PPFD, and reduce output during hot weather or high-ambient-temperature periods. The 1000e DE integrates with the Gavita EL2 Master Controller for automated output scheduling and group dimming of up to 80 connected fixtures. DE HPS vs. LED for Commercial Operations
For commercial operations already running Gavita DE HPS infrastructure, the LED transition decision involves comparing replacement cost against ongoing energy and cooling savings. Use our Electricity Cost Calculator to model the specific payback period for your facility at your electricity rate. Gavita's own LED Pro series (1700e LED and similar) is the designed upgrade path within the Gavita ecosystem -- maintaining EL2 Master Controller compatibility while transitioning to LED efficiency. Gavita HPS FAQ
What is the difference between Gavita Pro 1000 DE and 1000e DE?
The Pro 1000 DE is the standard fixed-output 1000W double-ended HPS fixture with an integrated electronic ballast. The Pro 1000e DE uses the E-Series electronic ballast with adjustable output from 600W to 1150W in selectable steps -- providing operational flexibility to match output to growth stage, season, and ambient temperature. The 1000e DE also supports full EL2 Master Controller integration with remote output control across all connected fixtures from a single controller. For new commercial installations, the 1000e DE is the more versatile choice; the 1000 DE is appropriate for fixed-output programs where adjustability is not needed.
What is the Gavita EL2 Master Controller?
The Gavita EL2 Master Controller is a multi-fixture lighting management system that connects up to 80 Gavita E-Series fixtures via a daisy-chain cable network and controls their output simultaneously from a single interface. The EL2 provides coordinated sunrise/sunset ramping (gradual intensity transitions at lights-on and lights-off), group dimming for temperature-triggered output reduction, and photoperiod scheduling without individual timers per fixture. For commercial operations running many Gavita fixtures, the EL2 is a significant operational efficiency tool -- replacing individual timers and manual output adjustments with centralized automated control. The EL2 is compatible with Gavita LED E-Series fixtures as well as HPS E-Series for operations running mixed or transitional lighting.
How often should Gavita DE HPS bulbs be replaced?
Replace Gavita DE HPS bulbs every 10,000-12,000 hours of operation -- approximately 12-18 months at 18-hour daily use or 18-24 months at 12-hour (flowering) use. Gavita brands Philips GreenPower DE lamps as their primary recommended replacement for Pro 1000 DE fixtures. At degraded-output operation (20-30% decline by 10,000 hours), continuing to run old bulbs produces measurably lower PPFD and yield while drawing full rated wattage -- the efficiency argument for timely replacement is straightforward.
Can Gavita HPS fixtures be dimmed?
Gavita Pro 1000e DE fixtures with E-Series ballasts can be dimmed via the EL2 Master Controller or compatible third-party dimming systems -- output adjustable from 600W to 1150W. Standard Gavita Pro 1000 DE fixtures without E-Series ballasts are fixed-output and cannot be dimmed without replacing the ballast. For existing non-E-Series Gavita HPS installations, the retrofit path to dimming capability is replacing the ballast with an E-Series unit and adding EL2 Master Controller connectivity.
Should I upgrade from Gavita HPS to Gavita LED?
The economics depend on your electricity rate, fixture count, and cooling costs. Gavita's Pro 1700e LED (645W) produces comparable canopy PPFD to the Pro 1000 DE HPS at 36% less wattage -- significant electricity savings at scale. Gavita LED fixtures maintain EL2 Master Controller compatibility, making them a native upgrade that preserves your existing controller infrastructure. At commercial electricity rates ($0.10-0.15/kWh), a 10-fixture room transitioning from 1000W DE HPS to 645W LED saves approximately $1,200-2,500 annually in electricity before factoring cooling cost reduction. Use our Electricity Cost Calculator with your specific rates to model the exact payback period.
