TrolMaster Aqua-X Series Irrigation Controllers
The TrolMaster Aqua-X Series is a line of data-driven irrigation and fertigation controllers designed for commercial and advanced hobby growers who manage irrigation through substrate moisture and EC data rather than fixed timers. Aqua-X controllers integrate with substrate sensors to trigger irrigation events based on measured growing medium VWC (volumetric water content), enabling the precision dry-back management and crop steering protocols used in professional coco coir and rockwool production systems.
Sensor-Based vs. Timer-Based Irrigation
Traditional timer-based irrigation delivers water on a fixed schedule regardless of actual substrate moisture conditions - efficient on average but unable to respond to day-to-day variation in transpiration rates driven by light intensity, temperature, and plant stage. The Aqua-X approach triggers irrigation based on substrate VWC measurements, delivering water when the substrate reaches a target dry-back threshold rather than on a fixed clock. This precision is the foundation of modern crop steering, where VWC targets are actively managed differently during vegetative, early flowering, and late flowering stages to influence plant behavior and yield outcomes.
Aqua-X System Integration
Aqua-X controllers integrate directly with TrolMaster's substrate sensor hardware and connect to the TrolMaster system network alongside Hydro-X climate controllers for a unified monitoring and control environment. TrolMaster Aqua-X FAQ
What is the TrolMaster Aqua-X used for?
The TrolMaster Aqua-X is an irrigation controller that uses substrate sensor data to trigger and manage irrigation events based on measured growing medium moisture content rather than fixed timers. It is designed for growers who actively manage dry-back cycles and crop steering protocols - primarily in coco coir and rockwool production systems where precision VWC management drives yield and quality outcomes. The Aqua-X connects to substrate sensors, controls irrigation zone valves, logs historical substrate data, and integrates with other TrolMaster devices for unified grow room management.
What is crop steering and how does Aqua-X support it?
Crop steering is the practice of using environmental and irrigation inputs to influence plant development and push plants toward vegetative growth or reproductive (flowering/fruiting) expression based on production goals. In substrate growing, irrigation frequency and VWC targets are key steering levers - frequent irrigations with higher minimum VWC encourage vegetative growth; managed dry-backs with lower overnight VWC push reproductive development. Aqua-X automates the irrigation side of this by triggering zones at defined VWC thresholds and logging data for review, making repeatable steering protocols practical at commercial scale.
Does the Aqua-X work with the TrolMaster Hydro-X?
Yes. TrolMaster Aqua-X and Hydro-X devices operate on the same system network and can be monitored and managed together through the TrolMaster app. The Hydro-X manages climate (temperature, humidity, CO2, lighting), while the Aqua-X manages irrigation. Running both together gives you a unified data environment where substrate moisture, climate conditions, and plant behavior data are all logged to the same platform - enabling the correlation analysis that advanced crop production programs rely on for continuous optimization.
