Replacement Coconut Carbon, KDF & Catalytic Carbon Filter Cartridges
Replacement filter cartridges maintain the performance of water filtration systems over time as the filter media reaches its adsorption capacity. Coconut carbon, KDF (kinetic degradation fluxion), and catalytic carbon filters target different contaminants in municipal and well water used in hydroponic and growing operations. GrowoniX, Hydro Logic, and AXEON Water Technologies are the primary brands in this collection, providing replacement cartridges compatible with their respective water filtration systems and RO pre-filter stages.
Filter Types and What They Remove
Coconut activated carbon filters (GrowoniX White Coconut Carbon, Hydro Logic BIGboy Green Coconut Carbon) are the most effective carbon type for chlorine removal - the microporous structure of coconut-shell-derived carbon provides high surface area for chlorine adsorption. KDF85/Catalytic Carbon filters (Hydro Logic Stealth-RO KDF85/Catalytic Carbon) combine KDF media (a zinc-copper alloy that reduces chloramine, heavy metals, and hydrogen sulfide via redox reaction) with catalytic carbon (a specially processed carbon that removes chloramine more effectively than standard activated carbon). For municipal water treated with chloramine specifically, KDF/catalytic carbon is more effective than coconut carbon alone.
Replacement Intervals
Filter replacement intervals depend on source water quality and flow volume. A general guideline: coconut carbon pre-filters in moderate-quality municipal water should be replaced every 6-12 months or after 10,000-20,000 gallons of processed water. KDF/catalytic carbon filters last longer than standard carbon and are typically rated for 50,000+ gallons. Follow the manufacturer's recommended replacement schedule for your specific system. Replacement Filter Cartridges FAQ
What is the difference between coconut carbon and KDF/catalytic carbon filters?
Coconut activated carbon filters are highly effective at removing chlorine (free chlorine at standard municipal concentrations is adsorbed within seconds of contact), taste and odor compounds, and organic chemicals. However, standard activated carbon - including coconut carbon - has limited effectiveness against chloramine (the chlorine/ammonia compound increasingly used in municipal water systems). KDF/catalytic carbon filters combine KDF media (which removes chloramine and heavy metals via redox reaction) with catalytic carbon (a processed carbon with enhanced chloramine reduction capability). If your water utility uses chloramine, a KDF/catalytic carbon filter is the correct choice; if your water uses only standard chlorine, coconut carbon is highly effective and economical.
How often should I replace my water filter cartridges?
Replace coconut carbon pre-filter cartridges every 6-12 months in typical growing operation use with moderate-quality municipal water. If your source water has high turbidity, high chlorine concentration, or high organic load, replacement may be needed more frequently - an early sign is reduced water flow through the system or increased chlorine taste/odor in the filtered output. KDF/catalytic carbon filters rated for 50,000+ gallons have substantially longer service lives in clean municipal water. For RO systems, replace the sediment pre-filter every 6 months and the carbon pre-filter on the same schedule to protect the RO membrane, which is the most expensive component in the system.
Will any carbon filter cartridge work in my GrowoniX or Hydro Logic system?
No - filter cartridges must be compatible with your specific system housing in terms of physical dimensions and connection type. GrowoniX and Hydro Logic use proprietary housing configurations in some of their system lines; use only GrowoniX replacement cartridges in GrowoniX housings and Hydro Logic replacements in Hydro Logic systems to ensure proper fit and performance. Some systems use standard 10-inch or 20-inch filter housings that accept generic cartridges, but this varies by model. Check your system manual or the GrowoniX/Hydro Logic replacement filter listings for the specific cartridge compatible with your system model before purchasing.
