Outdoor Irrigation

For those growing outdoors, irrigation systems will be slightly different than those of indoor gardeners. Make sure you are ready for this growing season, and shop Hydrobuilder’s supply of outdoor irrigation supplies today!

What is the best way to irrigate an outdoor garden?

The best way to irrigate your outdoor garden will depend on your access to water, electricity, and the degree to which you wish to automate it.

If you are growing in your backyard, it will be easy to set up an automated irrigation system using an outdoor irrigation timer. This will water your garden without you having to manually turn on and off your system.

Pair the timer with garden hose and drippers or nozzles, and you are ready to go!

If you don’t want to set up a system like this, you can use a simple watering nozzle or wand and garden hose to irrigate manually.

How often should I water my outdoor plants?

Every garden is different, so the only way to figure out how often you need to irrigate is with a soil meter to monitor moisture. The meter will let you know when the ground is dry, and you can water accordingly.

Generally, you should water plants every day. The climate, soil type, and time of year will play a huge factor into how often you need to water your garden, so be prepared for a learning curve!

How much water do outdoor plants need?

Again, the only way to tell how much water your plants need is by testing the soil after you water it. For reference, the first inch of soil should be moist. Some plants may need less than a gallon per day, and some may need more.

The stage of plant life will also affect watering needs. For example, plants just starting from seed or clone may not need much water, whereas a plant in veg will need more water to fuel robust leafy growth.

Is it better to water plants at night or in the morning

Water plants at night is usually not a good idea. We recommend watering first thing in the morning, because temperatures are low enough where evaporation will be low. This will allow the water to seep deeper into the root zone.

When the sun is out, plants are more active and more likely to absorb water and nutrients.

At Hydrobuilder, we carry everything you need to start your outdoor irrigation system, including any outdoor irrigation accessories and supplies you may need!
