Air Pots for Root Pruning & Container Growing
Air pots are rigid plastic containers with a perforated sidewall design featuring inward-pointing cone-shaped holes that create air exposure throughout the root zone. When roots reach the perforated wall, they contact air rather than the smooth plastic surface of a standard pot — triggering air pruning at each exposed root tip and stimulating the lateral branching that produces a denser, more fibrous root system.
Air Pot vs. Fabric Pot: Root Pruning Approaches
Both air pots and fabric pots achieve root pruning through air exposure, but through different mechanisms. Fabric pots prune roots through the porous fabric wall — roots that extend to the wall surface are exposed to air and desiccate at the tip. Air pots use a rigid structure with specifically shaped apertures that direct root tips outward toward concentrated air exposure points. Air pots maintain their structure cycle after cycle without the degradation that fabric pots can experience after many washes. They are also easier to clean thoroughly between cycles and maintain more consistent air exposure characteristics throughout their service life.
Sizing & Substrate for Air Pots
Air pots are available from 0.5 liters for seedlings through 100+ liters for large container production. Growing media selection matters — soilless and coco mixes that drain freely are better suited to air pot use than heavy moisture-retentive soils that can create waterlogging at the base of the pot if drainage is insufficient. The increased aeration that air pots provide is most beneficial with media that supports good drainage in the first place.
