TDS, PPM & EC Meters for Hydroponic Nutrient Testing
Monitoring the concentration of your nutrient solution is as important as what you put in it. TDS (total dissolved solids), PPM (parts per million), and EC (electrical conductivity) meters all measure the same thing — how much dissolved material is in your water — but display it in different units depending on the meter and the grower’s preference. Understanding these readings and maintaining target ranges throughout each growth stage is fundamental to consistent, healthy plant development in any hydroponic or soilless system.
EC, PPM & TDS: Understanding the Readings
EC measures the electrical conductivity of your nutrient solution in milliSiemens per centimeter (mS/cm) or microSiemens (µS/cm) — the most universally used measurement in professional horticulture. PPM (parts per million) converts EC to a concentration reading using a conversion factor that varies slightly by meter brand and standard (500, 700, or 800 scale). TDS meters measure total dissolved solids and display in PPM. EC and PPM/TDS measure the same thing and a single combination meter can display both — you don’t need separate devices. Target EC ranges vary by growth stage: 0.5–1.2 mS/cm for seedlings and clones, 1.2–1.8 for vegetative growth, and 1.8–2.5+ for mature flowering crops depending on variety and environment.
PPM Targets by Growth Stage
For growers using PPM: seedlings and clones target 100–250 PPM; early vegetative growth 300–400 PPM; late vegetative 450–700 PPM; early and peak flowering 750–1,000 PPM; late flowering up to 1,200–1,600 PPM depending on crop. Use our Nutrient Mixing & Dilution Calculator to hit target EC or PPM precisely when mixing nutrient solutions from concentrates.
Meters from Bluelab, Hanna Instruments & TrolMaster
Hydrobuilder carries EC, PPM, and TDS meters from qualified brands including Bluelab, Hanna Instruments, and TrolMaster. Bluelab is the professional standard — their Truncheon nutrient meter is one of the most widely used tools in commercial CEA operations for its durability and no-calibration-required operation. Hanna Instruments offers precision laboratory-grade meters and combo devices (pH + EC + temperature in a single unit) at a range of price points. TrolMaster provides continuous monitoring EC sensors as part of their broader environmental control systems, suitable for automated data logging in commercial facilities.
Calibrating & Maintaining Your Meter
EC and PPM meters require periodic calibration with calibration solution to maintain accuracy. Most Bluelab instruments are pre-calibrated and factory-standardized, but verification with a known-concentration reference solution is good practice monthly or after battery changes. Keep probe tips clean and hydrated to prevent drift in readings over time.
