PyGanic Pyrethrin Insecticide
PyGanic is a pyrethrin-based botanical insecticide derived from chrysanthemum flowers, used for contact kill of a broad spectrum of insect pests in vegetable gardens, greenhouses, and indoor growing environments. Unlike synthetic pyrethroids that persist in the environment, naturally derived pyrethrins break down rapidly after application -- typically within hours to a few days under normal light and temperature conditions. PyGanic is OMRI listed for use in certified organic production and is registered for use on edible crops up to and including day of harvest on many species.
PyGanic Gardening vs. PyGanic Specialty
PyGanic Gardening is formulated for home garden and small-scale use, with a 0.4% pyrethrin concentration. PyGanic Specialty is a higher-concentration formulation (1.4%) designed for commercial greenhouse and indoor production applications where higher pest pressure demands faster knockdown. Both products work on the same broad-spectrum contact kill mechanism -- direct contact with the insecticide disrupts the nervous system of soft-bodied insects including aphids, thrips, spider mites, fungus gnats, and whiteflies. For commercial growers requiring the higher-concentration formula, PyGanic Specialty is the appropriate choice.
Application and Resistance Management
PyGanic should be applied during lights-off periods in indoor growing environments to minimize light degradation of the active ingredient and reduce bee and beneficial insect exposure. Rotate with products from different modes of action (such as spinosad, azadirachtin, or insecticidal soap) to prevent resistance development. PyGanic FAQ
What pests does PyGanic control?
PyGanic provides contact kill on a broad range of soft-bodied insects including aphids, thrips, spider mites, fungus gnats (adult), whiteflies, leafhoppers, and caterpillars. It works via direct contact -- the pyrethrin disrupts the insect's nervous system on contact, causing rapid paralysis and death. It does not have systemic activity, so thorough coverage of the plant surface including undersides of leaves is necessary for effective results.
Is PyGanic safe to use on edible crops?
PyGanic is OMRI listed and registered for use on edible crops including vegetables and herbs. The pyrethrin active ingredient breaks down rapidly -- typical pre-harvest intervals are very short, and many label registrations allow use up to and including day of harvest. Always read the current product label for the specific crop and application timing before use. Label directions are legally binding and supersede any general guidance.
What is the difference between pyrethrin and pyrethroid?
Pyrethrins are naturally occurring insecticidal compounds extracted from chrysanthemum flowers. They are biodegradable, break down rapidly with exposure to light and heat, and are approved for certified organic production. Pyrethroids are synthetic chemical analogs of pyrethrins -- engineered to be more stable and persistent in the environment, providing longer residual control. Synthetic pyrethroids are not approved for certified organic use. PyGanic uses naturally derived pyrethrins, making it appropriate for organic growers and production systems where rapid residue breakdown is important.
