Managing heat in the grow room during summer can be tough, especially if you use high intensity grow lights. Using fans is a great start, but in many cases this will not be enough. Depending on your climate, you will need a grow room air conditioner.
Grow room air conditioning
Plants thrive in conditions where temperatures are between 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit. The specific needs will change slightly as plants move from propagation into veg, and then from veg into flower.
When temperatures rise too high, plants can become dry, and potency and smell of your buds will be reduced come harvest time.
Other problems include powdery mildew, spider mites, root rot, and nutrient burn.
Common A/C systems for indoor gardens are the portable, commercial, and ceiling mounted devices. The best system, however, is the ductless mini split A/C.
What is a mini-split air conditioner?
A ductless mini-split air conditioner is the most popular means of cooling grow rooms. This system features two components: the air handler and the condenser.
The air handler is mounted inside, generally on a wall to save floor space, and is responsible for actually cooling the room. The condenser is usually installed outside, and expels hot air. The two components are connected by a lineset.
Benefits of a mini-split A/C
The main benefit of ductless mini-split systems is in the name: they do not need duct work. Ducting can decrease cooling capabilties by 30%. This results in the unit needing to work harder, and for longer.
Another benefit is that the air handler and the compressor are seperated, so there is less potential for heat being added during operation.
What is the best mini-split A/C?
Some of these mini-split systems are quick connect, and are considered DIY. Most of them, however, are more complex and will require professional HVAC installation.
To combat cold weather during winter months, choose a mini-split unit that also features a heat pump. This allows your A/C unit to heat your growing space, otherwise you will need a greenhouse heater.
When sizing your A/C unit, consider your power needs first. There are mini splits ranging from 120 volts up to 240 volts. You will also need to consider how many zones you want. It is common for the unit to only feature one zone, but some units can have up to five zones!
