Dechlorinators & Sediment Water Filters for Growing
Dechlorinators and sediment filters remove the specific water quality issues most commonly found in municipal tap water β chlorine, chloramines, and suspended sediment β without the full TDS reduction of reverse osmosis filtration. For growers whose source water is otherwise suitable for growing but contains chlorine or sediment that affects plant health or equipment longevity, a targeted filtration system provides meaningful improvement at lower cost and less water waste than a full RO system.
What Dechlorinators Remove
Carbon block dechlorinators remove free chlorine (99%+) and reduce chloramines through a combination of carbon adsorption and KDF media. Chlorine is added to municipal water as a disinfectant and is harmful to the beneficial microbial populations in organic growing programs and can inhibit root development in sensitive species at prolonged exposure. Chloramines β a combination of chlorine and ammonia used by many municipalities as a longer-lasting alternative to free chlorine β require KDF (kinetic degradation fluxion) media for effective removal; standard carbon filters alone donβt adequately reduce chloramine concentrations. Check your municipal water report to determine whether your supply uses free chlorine or chloramines before selecting a filter type.
Sediment Filters: Protecting Equipment & Emitters
Sediment filters capture particulate matter β rust, sand, scale particles, and other suspended solids β that can clog drip emitters, damage pump impellers, and cloud hydroponic reservoirs. A sediment pre-filter is the first line of defense in any water treatment setup, often installed upstream of carbon filters and RO membranes to protect those more expensive components from fouling. Sediment filters are rated by micron size β 5 micron filters capture most visible sediment; 1 micron filters address finer particulate that 5 micron allows through.
