Water Soluble Fertilizers for Hydroponics & Soil Growing
Water soluble fertilizers are dry or granular nutrient formulas that dissolve completely in water to form a clear nutrient solution - the primary format used in commercial greenhouse fertigation, large-scale hydroponic operations, and any application where the economics of shipping and storing concentrated dry products are significant compared to pre-mixed liquid nutrients. A pound of dry soluble fertilizer concentrate often contains the same plant nutrition as several gallons of a pre-mixed liquid nutrient, making dry formulas dramatically more cost-effective per gallon of final solution at commercial scale.
Dry Concentrate Formats: Powders, Granules & Soluble Packs
Water soluble fertilizers are available as fine powders (mix most rapidly, typically used in commercial batch mixing), coarser granules (slower to dissolve, sometimes preferred for top-dressing), and pre-measured soluble packs (single-dose packets for consistent mixing without weighing). Athena's Pro Line (Grow and Bloom) - the most widely adopted commercial dry concentrate program in modern indoor production - uses a fine powder format designed to dissolve rapidly in water and maintain stability in recirculating systems. General Hydroponics MaxiSeries (MaxiGro, MaxiBloom) is the most widely used single-part dry concentrate in hobby hydroponics, offering a simplified one-part mixing format at a significantly lower cost per gallon than their liquid FloraSeries. Water Soluble Fertilizers for Commercial CEA
Commercial CEA operations increasingly use dry concentrate programs (Athena Pro, Peters Professional, Haifa, JR Peters) for their cost efficiency, reduced shipping weight, and shelf stability compared to liquid concentrates that degrade over time. Peters Professional 20-20-20 and equivalent balanced formulas are the workhorse of commercial nursery and bedding plant production worldwide - widely available, thoroughly documented, and compatible with a broad range of crop types and irrigation systems. For high-volume commercial mixing and fertigation systems including Dosatron injectors, dry concentrates require thorough mixing in a pre-dissolve tank before injection to prevent undissolved particles from clogging emitters. Water Soluble Fertilizers FAQ
Are dry soluble fertilizers as effective as liquid nutrients?
Yes - the plant does not distinguish between plant-available nutrients delivered in dry or liquid form once dissolved. The nutrient chemistry is identical; the only difference is the delivery format. Dry concentrates must be fully dissolved before feeding to ensure uniform concentration in the final solution - undissolved particles in drip systems will clog emitters. At equivalent dissolved EC and pH, plants fed with dry concentrates perform identically to those fed equivalent liquid formulas. The practical advantage of dry concentrates is cost efficiency: a 5 lb bag of Athena Pro Grow concentrate typically makes the equivalent of many gallons of pre-mixed liquid nutrient at a fraction of the cost per gallon of final solution.
How do I mix dry soluble fertilizers for hydroponics?
For recirculating hydroponic systems and drip systems: dissolve the dry concentrate in a small volume of warm water (1 gallon per pound of dry product) to create a stock solution first, ensuring complete dissolution before adding to the main reservoir or injecting through a Dosatron. Never add dry powder directly to a full reservoir or irrigation line - undissolved particles clog emitters and create inconsistent concentration zones. After dissolving the stock solution, add it to the reservoir or dilution tank gradually while measuring EC. Check and adjust pH after all nutrients are fully mixed - dry concentrates often shift pH significantly upon dissolution.
