Seed Starting Trays for Germination & Propagation
Seed starting trays provide the organized, moisture-retentive environment that germinating seeds need during the critical early stage when they’re most vulnerable. The right tray keeps seeds consistently moist, maintains warmth at the growing medium surface, and organizes seedlings in a manageable format for thinning, transplanting, and labeling across multiple varieties.
Standard 1020 Trays, Cell Inserts & Humidity Domes
The standard 1020 flat (10×20 inches) is the universal propagation format in professional horticulture — compatible with all standard propagation racks, heat mats, and humidity domes. Solid-bottom trays hold water for bottom-watering and humidity maintenance; drain-hole trays allow excess water to escape and prevent waterlogging in top-watered setups. Cell insert trays fit inside the 1020 flat and divide the growing space into individual cells — available in 50, 72, 128, and 200 cell configurations, with fewer and larger cells producing bigger transplants and more cells producing higher plant counts per tray at smaller transplant size. Clear humidity domes trap transpired moisture above the tray, maintaining 80–95% humidity at the seedling canopy through the germination and early seedling stage.
Seed Starting Media & Heat Mats
Pair seedling trays with appropriate starter media — Rapid Rooter plugs, rockwool starter plugs, or oasis foam cubes for hydroponic programs; peat or coco-based seed starting mix for soil programs. Seedling heat mats placed under trays maintain substrate temperature at the 75–85°F range that accelerates germination in most vegetable and herb species. Consistent substrate temperature is one of the most important variables in achieving uniform germination rates across a full tray.
