Grow Light Hoods & Reflectors for HID Lighting Systems
HID lamps — HPS and metal halide — emit light in all directions from the arc tube. Without a reflective hood, the 50%+ of light emitted upward and sideways is either absorbed by the ceiling or diffused into the room rather than directed to the plant canopy. A quality reflective hood redirects this otherwise wasted light downward, increasing effective canopy PPFD by 30–50% compared to a bare lamp at the same wattage and hanging height.
Hood Types: Open Face, Air-Cooled & Enclosed
Open-face hoods (wing reflectors) are the simplest format — a reflective panel with no glass, positioned above the lamp. They provide excellent light distribution and allow heat to dissipate naturally into the grow room, but cannot be connected to ventilation ducting for active heat removal. Air-cooled hoods (sealed with glass) allow inline fans to pull air through the hood body and exhaust lamp heat directly out of the grow space before it reaches the canopy — the standard choice when light-to-canopy distance needs to be minimized or when room cooling is a constraint. Enclosed hoods seal completely and are the most effective at containing lamp heat for air-cooled removal.
Reflector Materials: Hammertone, Vega & Specular Aluminum
Hammertone finish reflectors diffuse light broadly with good uniformity across the canopy footprint — the most common choice for standard HPS and MH applications. Vega (highly polished specular aluminum) reflectors direct light more efficiently for maximum output at a specific point but can create intensity hot spots directly below the fixture. European Radiant glass and Adjust-A-Wing designs provide wide-angle coverage across larger canopy footprints than standard rectangular hoods. Match reflector size and style to your lamp wattage, canopy dimensions, and ceiling height for the best coverage uniformity.
