Small Indoor Grow Room Design & Setup Examples

One of the most common locations for your first indoor grow is a spare bedroom. Or in some cases, your closet.

This is a great way to get started. Not only is it very easy to check on your plants indoors. But, you never really have to go out of your way to feed or inspect! It's a win-win situation.

We are going to base all our examples in this section off a standard 12' x 10' spare bedroom.

2' x 4' grow tent setup and design

2' x 4' grow tent setup and design

This is the smallest, most simple growing room example we will show you. The 2' x 4' grow tent design will allow you to grow 2-4 full sized plants, or you can substitute with smaller pots to grow more small-medium-sized plants.

There are a few options when designing your grow, as you can see above.

Note that the third example is a closed loop, and the inline fan circulates air within the tent without expelling it.

This is a great option for those growing in their closet or bedroom, with no ideal place to duct the air.

4' x 4' grow tent setup and design

A 4' x 4' grow tent is a very popular option for hobby growers. With a typical soil grow, you can fit 6-8 full size plants.

We recommend beginners start with soil before jumping into a hydroponic grow, but if you are ready, there are a number of ways you can set up a small hydro grow tent.

With a 4' x 4' grow tent, you will be working with a smaller hydroponic system, which is perfect for those new to this style.

As you can see, you can use a system with four different growth modules. Or, you can use one large reservoir with individual sites within it.

If you have an entire room to devote to your grow, a 4' x 8' grow tent will be perfect for you.

Again, you can decide between hydroponics and soil.

You will grow less plants hydroponically, but there is a reason so many growers opt for this method.

You can focus on less plants, putting all your energy into a smaller area. Hydro plants grow faster, and generally yield heavier as well.

If this is your first grow, however, it is a better idea to stick to soil at first. You can add a hydro system after you have a few harvests under your belt.

You can grow 6-8 plants hydroponically. Or with soil, you can grow 12-16 plants.

10' x 10' grow tent setup and design

10' x 10' grow tent setup and design

If you have an entire room to dedicate to your grow and want to use as much of the space as possible, you can setup a grow room like this example.

Even in a 12' x 10' room, you still have room for a water reservoir, dehumidifier, and nutrient/tool storage. You can grow 24-32 full size plants, or use smaller pots and grow more small/medium sized plants.

The beauty of designing your grow room is that you get to decide how many plants you grow and how they grow.

Small Perpetual Harvest Indoor Grow Room Design Examples

The best way to get good at growing is to grow as often as possible. You can do this is with a multi-chamber grow tent, or with multiple tents for vegging and flowering.

This is only possible if you have the room for it, of course. If you do, you can harvest plants as often as every 6-8 weeks!

This is a far superior method to growing with one tent. This is not only for the increase in harvests, but because you can fine-tune the environment in each tent for that stage of growth.

For example, you can have your veg tent running on an 18/6 light schedule with a veg spectrum grow light. In the flower tent, it is a whole different atmosphere. You can run a 12/12 light schedule with a flower light spectrum.

A common multi-chamber growing room is using a 4' x 4' grow tent for propagation and vegging, and then moving plants into a 4' x 8' grow tent for flowering.

In the veg tent, you can have two mother plants you constantly strip clones from (more information on cloning here), 2 propagation trays for early life, and 9-12 young plants.

Then, you can move plants that are ready into the flowering tent. In this tent, you can easily fit 9-12 mature plants.

That last example not quite enough for you?

You can double the veg space, and use a 4' x 8' veg tent. This way, you can have up to 6 mother plants, the same 2 propagation trays, and up to 25 young vegging plants.

You would then follow the same process and move plants into the flowering tent when the time comes.

This way, you will never have to worry about a shortage of plants.

Large Grow Room Design Examples

If you are lucky enough to have a larger room to grow in, you can get really creative with your setup.

The sky is the limit, and you can have as few or as many tents as you'd like.

We are going to show you some designs you can copy for your own room, based off a 15' x 15' room.

8' x 8' grow tent setup and design

Large Grow Room Design Examples

This single tent set-up allows you to seriously dial in your environment. You can set up a mini-split AC in this tent, keeping your plants nice and cool.

The other reason you may consider sacrificing quantity is because of the quality you can achieve with this tent.

By adding in CO2 producers, like in the bottom two examples, you can supercharge plant growth, and drastically increase the weight of your harvest.

You can learn more about using CO2 in your grow tent here.

With an 8' x 8' tent, you are still able to grow up to 30 plants. Notice the ventilation system on these tents too.

8' x 8' hydroponic grow tent setup and design

Since you have the extra space in this larger bedroom, you can afford to fill it with a hydroponic grow tent. An 8' x 8' grow tent can house 9 hydroponic plants.

This diagram shows a simple setup with a Current Culture DWC system, and four LED grow lights.

Large Hydroponic Grow Room Setup and Design

Or, you could fill the entire room with hydroponic systems, like this example:

Large Hydroponic Grow Room Setup and Design

This example is not in a tent, and will require you to outfit your growing room in advance.

As you can see, the system ducts hot, smelly air outside the room on each side. There is no intake fan in this design, and fresh air comes in passively through the exhaust system.

Note the extra equipment you can use in your growing environment without a tent. This setup has a dehumidifier, a water reservoir, a water chiller, a storage rack, and still plenty of space to move and walk around.

Large Indoor Perpetual Harvest Grow Room Design Examples

In this 15' x 15' room, you have a lot more room.

You can get really creative with your grow room design, and we are going to show you some cool blueprints we've used.

4' x 8' veg tent with an 8' x 8' flowering tent setup and design

Large bedroom grow design

In this blueprint, you can use the 4' x 8' veg tent to house 6 mother plants, 2 propagation trays, and 25 young plants with two LED lights.

This is the same layout as the small bedroom examples.

The difference though, is that the flowering tent can easily support this many vegging plants.

In the 8' x 8' tent, you can flower 30 plants at once, with four LED lights.

Notice how the two ventilation systems are connected. This makes circulating fresh air into each tent very simple.

One Car Garage Grow Room Design Examples

If you have a garage with plenty of space and don't mind parking your car outside, you can set up in even larger grow!

We will show you examples of garage grows for both 1 and 2 car garages, respectively.

If you have a one car garage and want to set up a serious grow, you will not be able to park your car inside.

This is usually not a big deal for people. If you have a grow in your garage, you want to limit the number of times you open your garage door anyways.

Privacy is key!

4' x 4' veg tent with an 8' x 8' flowering tent setup and design

Grow room in a garage

This is a pretty simple design, and the two ventilation systems connect to make one main exhaust port outside the garage.

This keeps your growing environment fresh and healthy for plants.

The 4' x 4' veg tent can house two mother plants, two propagation trays for clones, and 12 young plants for veg.

Then, you can move the veg plants into the flowering tent, which can hold 30 plants at once!

As you can see, there is still plenty of room for storage and miscellaneous items you need to store in the garage.

4' x 8' veg tent with an 8' x 8' flowering tent setup and design

larger grow room two tents

This is the same set-up as before, with double the space for vegging.

You can flower the same 30 plants, but will be able to replenish them much quicker.

The 4' x 8' veg tent can hold six mother plants, 2 propagation trays, and 25 young vegging plants.

There is a little less storage space, but still more than enough in most cases.

Two Car Garage Grow Room Design Examples

In a two car garage, you essentially have double the space.

One way to approach this is to use the same layout as the 1 car garage example, because now you can park your car inside!

Or, if you want to maximize this extra space and fill it with even more plants, consider this blueprint:

4' x 8' veg tent, two 8' x 8' flowering tents, 4' x 8' drying tent setup and design

Two Car Garage Grow Room Design Examples

This is one of the most efficient grow room setups possible, because it sets up a separate environment for harvesting.

Here, you use the same veg set-up as some other systems, with six mother plants, 2 propagation trays, and 25 young plants.

This set-up focuses on heavy flowering, with two 8' x 8' flower tents. This leads to a total of 60 flowering plants!

Another cool feature is that when its time to harvest, you can hang branches to dry in the 4' x 8' drying tent.

You could make things easier on yourself by just using one of our harvesting, drying, and curing kits.

This is important because once harvest rolls around, environmental conditions change. Read our beginners guide to harvest for a better understanding of this step.

Commercial Indoor Warehouse Grow Examples

If you are operating a large scale or commercial grow in a warehouse, you will not be using a grow tent.

Instead, you will configure the warehouse to the specifications needed for perfect growing conditions.

The sky is the limit when it comes to commercial warehouses. Your layout will depend on your growing space, and your growing method.

Here is an example of an outfitted commercial warehouse.

Factoring Environment Into Your Indoor Grow Setup & Design

We've shared some really cool indoor grow setup & design examples, but we want to talk about the importance of climate now.

You need to setup your grow in a room where the environment is conducive to healthy plant growth, or where it can be easily manipulated.

Plants need a specific atmosphere to grow big and strong, including an ideal temperature and humidity range, air circulation, and CO2.

Often times, this will not occur on its own, and its on you to create this environment for your plants with growing room equipment such as fans, dehumidifiers, and CO2 devices.

By far the easiest way to control your environment is growing in a tent.

Should I grow in a tent even if I grow indoors?

It is highly recommended that you use a grow tent inside, and there are a number of reasons for this:

  • Full control over environment
  • Privacy and odor control
  • Contain the mess of your grow

Grow Tent Kits Are Perfect For Beginners

If this is your first indoor grow, you should strongly consider a complete grow tent package. You will get everything you need to start growing, including:

When you purchase a complete grow tent package, all that's left is grabbing a nutrient package and your seeds or clones, and you're ready to grow!
