Using Dry Organic Amendments In The Garden

If you have never used organic dry amendments before, you are missing out. These garden amendments are for use in your soil, and can be fine tuned to the phase of growth you are in.

By adding organic dry amendments into your soil, you can supercharge your growth in accordance with vegging or flowering.

Here are some options and guidelines you can start with to get you going.

This guide specifically focuses on Mother Earth's Meal Mix Grow and Bloom formulas, but can easily be used on many other brand and amendment formulas.

Try different methods and experiment to see what works best for you. Leave us a comment below with your results!

Vegetative Growth Period

Use the Grow Formula from planting through the vegetative period. There are 4 options to add this mix to your plants.

• Option 1: Blend With The Soil

Thoroughly mix 2 - 4 cups per cubic foot (ft3) of soil (1/3 - 2/3 cup per gallon). Reapply as top dress (see topdressing instructions below) every few weeks or as needed until the flowering stage. Letting the Meal Mix “cook” for a few weeks before planting will increase the availability of nutrition. To increase this process you can moisten the soil with a compost tea solution.

• Option 2: Top Dressing

Evenly apply 2 - 4 cups per cubic foot (1/3 - 2/3 cup per gallon of media) over the top of the soil. Cover the Meal mix with 1 - 2 inches of soil to help keep it out of the light and ensure it remains moist. Reapply every few weeks or as needed.

• Option 3: Spoon Feeding

Blend in or top dress 1 - 2 cups of Meal Mix per cubic foot as an initial charge; then top dress ½ - 1 cup per 1 cubic foot (1.5 - 2.5 tbsp per gallon of media) of soil weekly until the flowering period. Upon application cover the Meal mix with 1 - 2 inches of soil to help keep it out of the light and ensure it remains moist.

Bloom Growth Period

Use the Bloom Formula from planting through the flowering period. There are 4 options to add this mix to your plants.

• Option 1: Blending With The Soil

If you transplant as your plants transition from vegetative to flowering period, blend at the percentage rate of new soil to old soil then top dress the remaining % (see topdressing instructions below).

Use at the rate of 2¼ - 4½ cups per cubic foot (ft3) (1/3 - 3/4 per gallon of media). As an example; If you have been growing in a 5 gallon container and you are going to transplant to a 10 gallon container, blend 50% of your target application rate with the new soil and topdress the other 50% of your application rate evenly on the top of the old soil and cover with a generous layer of soil. Reapply as a top dress every few weeks or as needed.

• Option 2: Top Dressing

Evenly apply 2¼ - 4½ cups per cubic foot (1/3 - 3/4 cup per gallon of media) over the top of the soil. Cover the Meal mix with 1 - 2 inches of soil to help keep it out of the light and ensure it remains moist. Reapply every few weeks or as needed until the flowering period.

• Option 3: Spoon Feeding

Top dress 1/3 - 3/4 cup per cubic foot (2 - 3 Tbsp per gallon of media) of soil weekly until the flowering period. Upon application cover the Meal mix with 1 - 2 inches of soil to help keep it out of the light and ensure it remains moist.

Using Dry Organic Amendments With Compost Tea

Another option is to try mixing your own compost tea with dry organic amendments.

You can grab one of our compost tea kits and brew your own tea with whichever organic amendments you'd like. You would then apply these as a root drench, very similar to how you would feed pre-blended plant nutrients.

We have an entire guide on compost tea, which covers what it is, why its awesome, and how to brew your own.
